How to Obtain a Student Visa: A Guide

Studying in the United States offers incredible opportunities, but before you can begin your educational journey, you need to obtain the right visa. At Roberson Law, we specialize in helping international students navigate the complexities of the U.S. immigration system. Whether you’re applying for an F-1 or M-1 visa, our team can guide you through the process to ensure a smooth and successful application.

Step 1: Get Accepted to a SEVP-Approved School

Before applying for a student visa, you must first be accepted by a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Once accepted, your school will provide you with a Form I-20, which is essential for your visa application.

Step 2: Pay the SEVIS Fee

The next step is to pay the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee, which is required before submitting your visa application. Keep your receipt as proof of payment, as you will need it during your visa interview.

Step 3: Complete the DS-160 Visa Application

The DS-160 is the online nonimmigrant visa application form. You must fill it out accurately and completely. Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation page with a barcode, which you must bring to your visa interview.

Step 4: Schedule a Student Visa Interview

You will need to schedule an interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate in your home country. Visa appointment wait times vary, so it’s best to schedule your interview as early as possible.

Step 5: Prepare for Your Visa Interview

During your visa interview, a consular officer will determine whether you qualify for a student visa. You will need to bring the following documents:

  • A valid passport
  • Form I-20 from your school
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • SEVIS fee receipt
  • Visa appointment confirmation
  • Financial proof showing you can support yourself during your studies

Be prepared to answer questions about your academic plans, financial situation, and intentions after completing your studies.

Step 6: Receive Your Student Visa

If approved, you will receive your visa, allowing you to enter the U.S. up to 30 days before your program start date. Make sure to check the visa for accuracy and follow all entry requirements.
